Alexander McQueen 2016 Braids
Alexander McQueen 2016 – Proving braids don’t have to be clean and neat.

PLAITS/BRAIDS

Gorgeous plaits and braids are not new to the fashion scene, however they’re being stepped up an extra notch and they’re everywhere this summer season. Not only are plaits beautifully versatile, but they’re perfect for getting your hair out of  your face and off your neck in a way that will capture anyone’s attention.

Braid Crown Headband

Try something beautifully elegant and sophisticated like a crown braid to pair with an outfit that truly deserves to be the main focus or if you’re wearing bulky jewelry.

What’s better than a classic side braid? They’re easy to do and they look great with everything. Whether you’re going for a hike outdoors or attending an art gallery, the classic side braid is perfect for any occasion.

Vogue Side Braid

Is your style more contemporary? Long and sleek side braids will add a relaxed     street style effect to any outfit. They’re perfect for edging up a simple band tee.

Casual French Braids

Messy styles tend to look the most interesting. Take a note from Alexander Mcqueen and opt for pinning up all of your hair in a messy braided nest. This adds a cool touch to your ensemble and compliments your features.

Chic Silver Headbands

HEADBANDS

Headbands went out of style somewhere in between the 90’s and early 2000’s. But, now the headband is making it’s way back into the scene as an accessory staple for Spring/Summer 2016.

Headband bandana

Go Boho!

Summer is fast approaching, which means hot & humid days and breezy nights. Slap on a head scarf to wear with beachy waves for a bonfire in the sand.

Jeweled Headpiece

Braid Crown

Go with a bejeweled head piece to dress up a simple outfit or follow Chanel’s idea of pairing two complimentary headbands together in one look! Stay one step ahead and merge two trends together – braid a piece of your hair and wrap it around your crown to get the headband effect!

Chic Editorial Fringe Bang

SHORT FRINGE

Think Audrey Hephburn a la Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but modernized and edgier.

Audrey Hephburn Fringe Bang

Admittedly, this look is not for everyone. The severe cut looks best on those with angled jaws and prominent cheek bones. But, if you can pull off this look you’ll have your fair share of compliments.

This is truly the cut in fashion for Spring/Summer 2016, especially in London where mod-chic is always in style.

Short Fringe Bang

“PUNS”

Pun Hairstyle Trend

A “pun” is a new fashion term. It mixes a pony tail and bun together in one. The casually-loose style is so easy to do yourself. All you need is a hair tie – just throw it up quick and you’re done.

How To Do A Fishtail Braid

Have you always wanted to try the ethereal fishtail braid for yourself? Here’s how in FOUR EASY STEPS.

HOW TO DO A FISHTAIL BRAID

Messy-Fishtail-Braid-Hairstyle

Although this braid might look intimidating at first, it’s not too difficult to achieve once you get the hang of the motions. Plus, other than a hair tie, there are no tools or products necessary to recreate this look. It’s time to unleash your inner hair stylist – follow the steps below and you’ll have a perfectly messy & beautiful hair style.

Fishtail Braid Chic

STEP ONE:

Separate your hair into two sections. Unlike your typical braid, a fishtail braid only requires your hair to be parted in two.

STEP TWO:

Using your fingers, separate a small section of your hair from the outer edge of the first section and cross it over the second section – this should overlap the same way you would do it if you were doing a standard braid. Get a good grip on the hair and tighten the plait, still keeping the two sections separate. How To Do A Fishtail Braid

 STEP THREE:

Continue to overlap small pieces from each section until you reach the ends. Try to keep the pieces that you’re overlapping with the same size for a consistent looking finished braid – you generally want to keep the sections to a half-inch.

Bonus Tip: You can make the sections larger for a bigger looking braid – this is especially great for messy braids (as pictured above).

STEP FOUR:

Once you’ve reached the ends of your hair, secure the braid with an elastic. Finish the look by gently tugging at the outside pieces of the braid with your fingers to loosen it for that effortless appearance.

Double Fishtail Braid

Of course if you’re a beginner and new to braiding or you learn better by watching rather than reading, definitely utilize Youtube for some easy to follow hair tutorials.

When you recreate the look for yourself use the hashtag #musictomyhair and we’ll repost our favorite looks here!

Learn How To Style Your Hair Based On Your Natural Texture

Learning how to accentuate your natural hair texture means keeping your styling time to a minimum and your hair at it’s healthiest. Here’s how to do it…

STRAIGHT HAIR

Straight Hair Natural Texture

Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine
Aveda Brilliant         Spray-On Shine                   $28

How To Style: If your natural texture is straight, emphasizing the shine and health of your hair is key. How to make the most of your straight hair? Use a deep-cleansing shampoo and follow up with a lightweight conditioner, focusing the product only on the ends. Be sure to avoid using too many styling products, which can have the effect of weighing down your hair and flattening it. Instead, we suggest blow-drying with a nozzle and a smooth paddle brush. Pull the hair taut with the brush and aim the air towards the ends.  Finish the style with a straightening iron, if necessary, and add a shine serum to get that light reflecting shampoo-commercial hair.

Bonus Tip: Girls with straight hair should avoid pointing the blow dryer directly into your hair – this will cause frizz! Instead tilt the dryer down and use a low setting to dry.

WAVY HAIR

Wavy Hair Texture

Living Proof Full Thickening Mousse
Living Proof              Full               Thickening      Mousse $27

How To Style: If you wake up with a natural wavy texture that looks like you just came from a beach vacation – count yourself lucky! The best thing to do to style your hair is to let it air dry. Simply brush when wet and apply a little volumizing mousse to the roots in a scrunching motion to accentuate your curls and spritz on a sea salt spray. If you want to apply some heat, attach a diffuser to the end of your dryer and on the lowest setting, take sections of your hair from root to tip and place inside the diffuser and against your head until dry.

Bonus Tip: For a more styled effect like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, take a 1 inch clipless curling iron and wrap large sections around the barrel changing the direction facing away from and towards your face. Spray with a light hold hairspray and you’re done!

THICK/CURLY HAIR

Davines Curl Building Serum
Davines Curl Building Serum $26

How To Style: To get the most out of your naturally thick and curly hair, apply a curl-building serum from the mid-shaft to ends to wet hair and rough blow dry on a medium-low setting until hair is about 80% dry.  Roll your hair from ends to root into large Velcro rollers. Pin the roller in and allow to air dry and cool while you apply your makeup or eat breakfast. Once the hair is completely dry, remove the rollers and tousle your hair to break up the curls a bit. Spray with some strong hairspray and you’re done!

Bonus Tip: When applying styling products, don’t use too much! Take the time to apply them evenly and only apply more where needed. Be careful not to overdo it.

                                            VERY CURLY HAIR

Natural Texture Curly Hair

How To Style: Apply a detangling mask in the shower and gently comb through wet hair with a wide-tooth comb. Spray in a curl enhancer and twist small sections around your finger and release to get a more uniform curl pattern. Lightly blow dry with a diffuser and apply a small amount of oil to the ends to keep your curls looking hydrated and shiny.

Bonus Tip: Make sure that you’re getting a quality haircut specifically tailored to your curly hair. This will help the style to look it’s absolute best.

MTMH: How To Choose The Perfect Cut For Your Face Shape

At Music To My Hair we pride ourselves on offering a detailed consultation before each appointment. We take the time discuss your lifestyle & daily demands, while also considering the shape of your face and unique bone structure.

You can also do this at home by taking a ruler and measuring the widths of your brow, cheekbones and jawline, and the length of your face from forehead to chin.

Round = your face is nearly as wide as it is long, with your forehead and jaw curving at the corners. ie: Charlize Theron

Heart-Shaped = you have a wide brow and narrow jaw. ie: Taylor Swift

Oval = width of brow, cheekbone, and jaw are almost equal. ie: Ashley Greene

Square = Wide brow & narrow jaw, but the length and width of your face is equal. ie: Olivia Wilde

ROUND FACE

THE CUT
A shorter chop with spiky layers sliced around the crown.

“If you’re going short, go short all the way” –Celebrity Hairstylist Garren

A petite pixie cut breaks up the roundness of your face, while choppy pieces add height up top which lengthens your face and emphasizes your eyes. The style is also extremely easy to style whether you have straight, wavy, or fine hair.

Avoid a jaw-length bob for a round face and stay away from this style if you have very curly hair.

Charlize-Theron-Pixie

HEART FACE

THE CUT
Long layers with curly sections and full bangs.

WHY IT WORKS

“Never pair a defined jaw with a heavy, motionless curtain of hair. The result will be too severe.” – Garren

Thick fringe like Taylor Swift’s offsets prominent jaws. Regardless of texture, the look is easy to pull off.

If your hair is fine, keep your layers long and concentrated closer to the ends to create a full, but light effect.

LONG/OVAL FACE

THE CUT
A sleek blowout that hits around the shoulders.

WHY IT WORKS

Although the layers look uniform, the subtle variations in length keep your strands from lying flat against your head.

If your hair is fine, keep uneven pieces around your face so that the hair looks as full as possible.

THE CUT

Wispy shoulder-length layers starting a few inches above the ends with sweeping bangs.

WHY IT WORKS

“The airy ends prevent the eye from noticing any sharp corners” Garren

Feathery layers conceal a strong chin and add volume to any hair type.

Part your hair to the side for an asymmetrical effect.

Of course you don’t have to have a pixie cut if you have a rounder face or long hair if you have an oval face – that’s what’s great about having the talented and experienced stylists at Music To My Hair available to help you decide what cut would flatter your face the best.
