How To Style: If your natural texture is straight, emphasizing the shine and health of your hair is key. How to make the most of your straight hair? Use a deep-cleansing shampoo and follow up with a lightweight conditioner, focusing the product only on the ends. Be sure to avoid using too many styling products, which can have the effect of weighing down your hair and flattening it. Instead, we suggest blow-drying with a nozzle and a smooth paddle brush. Pull the hair taut with the brush and aim the air towards the ends. Finish the style with a straightening iron, if necessary, and add a shine serum to get that light reflecting shampoo-commercial hair.
Bonus Tip: Girls with straight hair should avoid pointing the blow dryer directly into your hair – this will cause frizz! Instead tilt the dryer down and use a low setting to dry.
How To Style: If you wake up with a natural wavy texture that looks like you just came from a beach vacation – count yourself lucky! The best thing to do to style your hair is to let it air dry. Simply brush when wet and apply a little volumizing mousse to the roots in a scrunching motion to accentuate your curls and spritz on a sea salt spray. If you want to apply some heat, attach a diffuser to the end of your dryer and on the lowest setting, take sections of your hair from root to tip and place inside the diffuser and against your head until dry.
Bonus Tip: For a more styled effect like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, take a 1 inch clipless curling iron and wrap large sections around the barrel changing the direction facing away from and towards your face. Spray with a light hold hairspray and you’re done!
How To Style: To get the most out of your naturally thick and curly hair, apply a curl-building serum from the mid-shaft to ends to wet hair and rough blow dry on a medium-low setting until hair is about 80% dry. Roll your hair from ends to root into large Velcro rollers. Pin the roller in and allow to air dry and cool while you apply your makeup or eat breakfast. Once the hair is completely dry, remove the rollers and tousle your hair to break up the curls a bit. Spray with some strong hairspray and you’re done!
Bonus Tip: When applying styling products, don’t use too much! Take the time to apply them evenly and only apply more where needed. Be careful not to overdo it.
VERY CURLY HAIR
How To Style: Apply a detangling mask in the shower and gently comb through wet hair with a wide-tooth comb. Spray in a curl enhancer and twist small sections around your finger and release to get a more uniform curl pattern. Lightly blow dry with a diffuser and apply a small amount of oil to the ends to keep your curls looking hydrated and shiny.
Bonus Tip: Make sure that you’re getting a quality haircut specifically tailored to your curly hair. This will help the style to look it’s absolute best.
Coloring your hair can change up your entire look and ignite your confidence. Whether you’re just covering a few grays or going all out with a vibrant color, you’ll feel like a brand new person as soon as you step out of the salon.
It’s important to take extra care of color treated hair and there are a few precautions we suggest you take in order to keep your color lasting and beautiful until your next appointment.
Sulfates are infamous for stripping color and moisture from the hair follicle, which leaves your once vibrant-looking color with a dull and dry appearance. Investing in a sulfate-free shampoo, like Aveda’s Color Conserve line, will help to extend your color life and keep your locks looking fresh.
Bonus Tip: Do not wash your hair more often than every other day, in fact try extending your washes to 2-3 times per week and wash in cool water. Hot water tends to strip the color faster, while cool water actually seals your color in.
AVOID ALCOHOL-BASED STYLING PRODUCTS!
Although it may be difficult, opting for alcohol-free styling products will help your color last longer. Like sulfates, alcohol based products increase the fading process time, especially while the sunlight is more direct in the summertime. Luckily, there are lots of products out there that are alcohol-free for this exact reason. Products that contain alcohol can make your hair feel brittle, so taking a break from them will soften your locks.
BEAT THE HEAT!
We always suggest only using hot styling tools like curling wands and straightening irons with a heat protectant. However, colored hair is more susceptible to damage so minimizing your use of blow dryers and curling/straightening irons is key to keeping your color-treated hair healthy. Embrace your natural hair texture! Simply apply some styling products that will add a little structure and emphasize your natural texture and allow your hair to air dry.
Bonus Tip: If you must blow dry your colored hair, give yourself some extra time to get ready and keep it to the lowest heat setting. Better yet, if your blow dryer has a cool blast setting, use that instead. Of course, this means a little more time in your daily routine, but more importantly it means keeping your hair health intact and your color looking great until your next appointment.
With summer right around the corner, it’s good to know how the warm months can impact your color. If you love to swim make sure to saturate your hair with clean water and apply a protective leave-in conditioner before you get in to help prevent the chlorine from damaging you color. The chemical treated water can build up in your hair and cause color (especially lighter colors) to develope into an unattractive green hue. It’s also a great idea to invest in a hair cleanser that specializes in removing the chlorine fromyour hair when you get out of the pool! Aveda’s Sun Care line includes the Protective Veil, a Hair & Body Cleanser, and an After-Sun Hair Masque.
GLAZE IT UP!
Schedule a glaze appointment between your initial color appointment and your retouch appointment to prevent your hair from losing its luster. A glaze is a clear deposit that brings back the shine into your hair without actually adding any color. This is the ultimate way to keep your hair looking its best.
